I do so hate it when I lose work…
summary:
I do really hate it when I lose work. Hours of work. Unrecovered. (in case I get comments about Windows etc…let’s just clear off by stating that it happened in OSX)
I’ll restart some other time. I was making a video for Grumpy Old Deafies’ posting about our Worshipful Overlord and Master of All - aka the RNID doing hearing aid services (possibly)…
Oh well…I will restart when I’ve calmed down. I need to, otherwise I’ll be throwing the damn Macbook at the wall and we can’t have that…somewhat…
I know that feeling!
Erm, I couldn’t help myself wondering if you were working under windows on macbook? Cos if OS X crashed, your work is still saved, unlike Windows.
Anyway, your video about ‘Not Really Interested in Deaf’ was funny!
I will use that joke whenever the mention of RNID comes up!
What happened then?
Gary - Yes it’s OSX. No it’s not Windows. I do not have Windows in my house. On my Macbook I actually use Ubuntu most of the time, but for film editing, I switch to OSX.
And yes it’s lost. No OSX did not save it, so it’s bye bye work. I did not save the project under a name, thus it never “autosaved” (Final Cut don’t do that until the project is saved with a name - which I think is daft, but then I should have saved it with a name…) No movie clips etc shows up.
What happened?
Well cos I didn’t autosave, so that’s what I was going to do. But one media went offline and I needed to reconnect - while doing that, for some reason the Finder window showed up behind the windows and so obviously I didn’t see it. When nothing showed up, I clicked on the Cancel button. Nothing happened…hmm…moved to Expose to show all windows and I see two Finder windows instead of 1, so looking at the 2nd one and it turns out that is the one to select the media that’s offline.
But that couldn’t be closed down, and Final Cut was unresponsive because of clicking on Cancel. Nothing could be done to get them going again. So I was in the end forced to “Force-quit” it…and opening it up again, project is gone and I can’t find the files I was working on any-bloody-where.
“It Just Works” my arse. OSX is prone to crashes. Rarer than Windows, but it can and does crash. I’ve got a few “argh” moments with it.
Oh well. Such is life.
Glad you liked the PR video from RNID
Bad luck, I had no idea that you have to save your work just in case!
I just got Macbook Pro last month and a friend commented about how his work was still saved after his mac crashed but I haven’t experienced it just yet!
Gary - actually it depends on the software you are using. For example - OpenOffice is quite good at auto-saving files on all platforms (NeoOffice for OSX) but some other such as Final Cut does require a saved project for autosaving etc.
Nice to know someone did a Peter Petrelli from Heroes
Suggestion about Final Cut, get in touch with Apple and comment on this? (Not sure if the new version of Final Cut has an auto save feature, though, it will probably cause a drain on the CPU/hard drive accessing like crazy)
Don’t throw your MacBook to the wall
